Now Showing: Inspirational UBICOMP Videos
This is a list of (hopefully!) inspirational videos showing ubiquitous computing interfaces. Some of the videos simply show visions of what the future could hold (e.g. from major computer companies), and others show working prototype systems built in laboratories. If you have additional suggestions for this list (and particularly if you can provide a way to locate the video clip), please contact me. This list was originally inspired by the UBICOMP 2002 Video Program. These videos were shown shown for an MIT 2004 IAP activity: Movie Making: Inventing the Future of Ubiquitous Computing.
Also worth looking at is this list of movies that show visions of environments of the future. Selections from many of these movies are highly relevant and complement the videos listed here.

The Strauss Mouse (1990) [0:12:58]
Type: Inspirational video
Author: M. Mantei
Description: The Strauss Mouse is a sequence of short clips of the variety of mouse use behavior we have observed in our Observation Laboratory at the Center for Machine Intelligence. The behavior is both inefficient and persistent because there is nothing in the design of the mouse that guides a user toward the most effective use. Each of the user strategies represents a valid interpretation of the interface and a model the user might form of the pointing and selection task.

The Piano Tutor (1990) [0:11:32]
Type: Research prototype
Author: M. Sanchez, A. Joseph, R. B. Dannenberg, P. Capell, R. Saul and R. Joseph
Producer: Carnegie Mellon University
Description: The Piano Tutor combines a multi-media presentation system with an expert system to form an interactive system for teaching beginners how to play the piano. The system uses real-time score-following software to track student performances, turning pages of music on a video display in real time. Detected performance errors are processed by an expert system that assembles a remedial presentation that can include video, voice, music, text, and graphics. To keep the problem manageable, the Piano Tutor curriculum is composed of a large collection of modules called lessons. The system automatically navigates through the set of lessons using a dynamic model of the student's knowledge so that each student receives individually tailored instruction.

Three-Dimensional Interfaces in Shared Environments (1990) [0:06:19]
Type: Research prototype
Author: D. Weimer
Producer: AT&T Bell Laboratories
Description: In this tape we show three-dimensional interface paradigms that we have developed using a glove that can track a person's hand movements: gesture recognition, and shape-gesturing. We show how a VPL DataGlove can be combined with speech recognition to implement more natural interfaces for three-dimensional CAD. The tape starts by describing the hardware of our experimental graphical interface. We describe how the interface relies on the orientation of the hand, the index finger position, and static gestures of the thumb. Operations are shown that use the finger tip position for 2D and 3D pointing and dragging. Pointing and dragging is demonstrated in the following operations: defintion of b-spline curves/surfaces, and dragging control points in 3D. The tape demonstrates the use of thumb gestures in the following operations: incremental object rotation, menu selection, and enabling/disabling dragging operations. Collaborative engineering systems can be designed by combining these interface paradigms with networking. Collaobrative systems could provide multi-user access to shared three-dimensional spaces. With tracking gloves, the user's hands can be used to interact with people using gestures, or to interact with the computer.

A Human Factors Guide to Computer Speech (1991) [0:12:53]
Author: C. Cowley and D. Jones
Producer: University of Wales
College of Cardiff
Description: Recently, computer speech technology has advanced to the point where practical, commercially available speech output devices can be utilized for a variety of applications which take advantage of the unique attributes of language as a communication mode. Such devices, although not approaching the sophistication and flexibility of their human counterparts, allow production and manipulation of intelligible synthesized speech and the storage and display of high-quality digitized utterances. As the technology becomes more widely known and the costs decrease, much wider usage can be anticipated.
Guides 3.0 (1991) [0:13:24]
Type: Concept video
Author: T. Oren, A. Don and B. Laurel
Producer: Apple Computer
Description: The Guides prototype demonstrates the use of narrative metaphor and antrhopomorphic agents for browsing a multimedia database of early American history. The Guides are characters drawn from this period, and are explained through the use of video stories. In addition to delivering these stories, they make recommendations of database to be browsed which are consistent with their interests. The System Guide, a contemporary figure, delivers both voice-over help information and browsing suggestions based on extrapolations of the user's interests. Options are also available for directed search and construction of guides which reprsent the user's own interests.

The Cue Ball as Part of a Gestural Interface (1991) [0:03:45]
Type: Research prototype
Author: D. Thiel
Producer: Incredible Technologies, Inc.
Description: This tape features the applications of an input device that translates the motion of a cue-ball rolled on a horizontal plane into computer input. It was developed for use in unattended entertainment products. Unlike hand motions required by joysticks, trackballs and mice, rolling a ball is a familiar gesture. When mapped to an appropriate task, the cue ball interface is very intuitive. This lowers the entry point of the activity making it available to a broader audience. The first three commercial applications are demonstrated

Towards Seamless Collaboration Media: From Team Work-Station to ClearBoard (1992) [0:22:24]
Type: Research prototype
Author: H. Ishii, K. Arita and M. Kobayashi
Description: This video presents the evolution of collaboration media design activities at NTT Human Interface Laboratories. "Seamlessness" has been a key concept of their evolving media design. The authors show the progression of their design from TeamWorkStation to ClearFace to ClearBoard. TeamWorkStation provides distributed users with a seamless shared workspace. Each user can still use their favorite application programs or desktop tools, so there is only a minor cognitive seam between the individual and shared workspaces. ClearBoard permits coworkers in two different locations to draw with color markers or electronic devices while maintaining direct eye contact, gaze awareness, and use of natural gestures.

Delft-WITLab: Research Issues and Methods for Behavioral Analysis (1992) [0:06:48]
Type: Research prototype
Author: J. van der Velden
Producer: Delft University, The Netherlands
Description: The video describes a first series of experiments studying distributed group work, focusing on the experimental setup and the tools used to capture and analyze interaction data. In the experiment, small task teams played a management game under various interaction conditions for a period of ten weeks. Data capture is through a computer-controlled video recorder that can record and play simultaneously on two or more tapes. A program developed at NPL-London allows video incidents to be indexed, retrieved, and edited. The video also shows a tool that registers the speech frequency and computer use of each group member during the experiment. With this tool, information can be dervied of the group interaction, the participation of each group member, their speech duration, and the speech sequences.
