During my undergraduate degree, I studied public health and literature, with a geographic focus in sub-Saharan Africa. I graduated with a degree in the Liberal Arts and Sciences from Quest University Canada in 2016. Subsequently, I moved to Uganda to learn from Ugandan-led organizations, and launched a forum on the nexus of arts, sciences, and humanities with the guidance of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences. I returned to my alma mater to work in admissions, where I continued to cultivate my interdisciplinary interests. In my admissions role, I fell into fascination with how databases and computer systems work. Determined to weave this interest into my focus and skillset, I finally found the Align program. This was the only program I found that could help me bridge the gap between my academic history and the skills needed to be able to succeed in a Master’s level computer science program. This program has helped me understand how my interdisciplinary interests and soft skills will be an asset to my endeavors in computer science. It has also helped me to rediscover and nurture my computational thinking abilities.
In the future, I plan to serve by solving problems at the nexus of medicine, music, and machines. The Align program has given me opportunities to incorporate my many interests through project based learning. This learning approach has also been a key tool in developing a portfolio that expresses both my problem solving abilities and my interdisciplinary thinking. I’m looking forward to co-op, which will allow me to gain industry experience while continuing to study. I’m so grateful to have access to the support that Khoury provides. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow as a computer scientist, learning more about the industry and my interests, and serving my communities through solving interesting problems.
