Biography
Tyré Richards is an academic advisor at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. She received her master’s and bachelor’s from Providence College, where she served in two graduate assistant roles. Richards was a graduate assistant at Providence College for the Friars Foundation Program, a program with the goal of easing the transition from high school to college for a select number of incoming students. She also served as the graduate assistant of residence life at the New England Institute of Technology. After receiving her master’s in higher education in 2021, Richards worked with the social work department of Providence College on decolonizing their syllabus, with a focus on the anti-racist pedagogy and de-colonization.
As an academic advisor, Richards works with students as a team to make sure they have a plan for success at Northeastern and beyond. She ensures that she can help students in any way she can and provides them with the resources necessary for their success. When advising students, Richards uses a holistic and student-focused approach to make sure she is listening to all their needs both within and outside of academics. What she enjoys most about her job is when she gets to meet with her students one on one. Students usually come in with a need, but she makes sure to take time to check in on how they are doing and get to know them better. Richards also enjoys teaching the First Year Experience course because it is essential that first year students have the smoothest transition possible into their college career. This course helps set the foundation for student success.
She has always had a passion for working with first-generation and other underrepresented students. Richards currently works with the FUNL Student Experience committee and is a member of the 2022 Women of Color in the Academy planning committee. She continues to expand her knowledge by joining events in the Northeastern community that would teach her about various student identities, as she wants to learn and understand every person for who they are. In college, Richards had the opportunity to work with many college students through her roles as an orientation leader, mentor, and resident assistant. She realized she had the compassion necessary for helping students who come to college, stay in college because not everyone has easy access to the resources that would lead them to succeed in college and beyond. She also found it essential that students have a sense of belonging when they are attending college, their home away from home. Richards strives to make sure students’ voices are heard inside and outside of the classroom, and she wants to continue using her role as a higher education professional to celebrate diversity and stand up for marginalized student identities.
Richards is passionate about Khoury College’s mission of CS for everyone. She is compelled by how dedicated the college is in assisting every student, ensuring sure all students succeed. From faculty to staff, everyone goes above and beyond so their students can have the resources they need to achieve academic success and personal growth.
