Sevtap Duman
Sevtap Duman is a PhD candidate in the Information Assurance program at Northeastern University’s Khoury College of Computer Sciences, advised by Professor Engin Kirda. Before joining the PhD program, Sevtap earned her bachelor’s degree in computer engineering from Gazi University and her master’s degree in computer engineering from Boston University. She is a research assistant and member of the Systems Security Laboratory (SecLab) group at Northeastern, and she is interested in researching the constant threats to web security through the cybercriminal’s eyes.

What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
Thus far, I have been studying the detection of trick banners on web pages and spam emails.
What are your research interests?
I am interested in client-end-side of security. When I first started my graduate studies, I wanted to be informed about how to protect my data from curious eyes, and after awhile I was pulled into the security world’s endless threats and attacks.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
Instead of patching the cracks and holes of vulnerabilities that occur on the Internet, I would like to initiate a robust protocol for using them safely.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting?
Systems security research is always a cat-and-mouse game. This security game interests me because I have to think like a mouse and always be on my toes. Throughout my research studies, I used tools from different areas of study such as image processing and natural language processing with security tools to distinguish malicious from benign. I like being able to benefit from other research disciplines and combine it with accustomed security implementations.
What are your research or career goals, going forward?
I want to be a successful academician who always learns.
Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?
I lived in Ankara for nearly 10 years.
