Biography
Kereme Murrell is an academic advisor at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. He received his master’s in school counseling from Capella University and has spent the last several years working in both higher education and K-12 education.
In Murrell’s role at Khoury College, he assists students with major and course planning, refers students to appropriate resources depending on their needs, interprets policies and procedures for students, and monitors student academic performance. He enjoys the opportunity to work in a fast-paced environment and interact with many students. Specifically, he loves to help students overcome barriers to their academic achievement and collaboratively problem-solve with students when adverse situations arise, for students to achieve their short- and long-term academic goals. Murrell has a strong interest in supporting first-year, first-generation students and furthering the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. He currently belongs to Khoury College’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion committee, the CS 1200 First-Year Seminar committee, and Khoury College’s First-Generation, Undocumented & Low-Income committee.
He chose to become an academic advisor and seminar instructor for first-year students because he learned just how instrumental these two aspects of higher education are in student development and achievement. While pursuing his undergraduate studies, Murrell experienced many challenges as a first-year, first-generation college student. He didn’t have anyone in his family or community who could effectively prepare him for college. Murrell was fortunate to receive guidance and support from academic advisors and professors during his time at Eastern Connecticut State University; that experience developed both his passion for student development and eagerness to give back to others and society. He believes there is no better way to give back than to become an academic advisor.
Murrell believes the mission of Khoury College is genuine and authentic, and the faculty and staff truly believe that computer science is for everyone, regardless of students’ backgrounds. He appreciates the work conducted at Khoury College is practiced in a family-oriented manner, which makes everyone feel welcomed.
