Biography
Kaan Onarlioglu is a part-time lecturer at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. He earned his doctorate in information assurance from Northeastern and received his master’s and bachelor’s in computer engineering from Bilkent University in Turkey. Prior to joining Northeastern, Onarlioglu was a visiting researcher at the International Systems Security Laboratory (iSecLab), Eurecom in Sophia Antipolis, France.
Onarlioglu’s research interests span a wide array of systems and Internet security topics, with an emphasis on operating systems security. He targets security problems with real-life impacts, with recent work in retrofitting novel security and privacy features into traditional systems and hardening existing software against evolving security threats. Onarlioglu is also an architect with Akamai’s security intelligence team, where he shifts between helping Akamai engineers build a secure CDN and educating Akamai’s customers on the company’s security stance.
Onarlioglu believes the computer security landscape constantly evolves as attacks become more complex and as attackers become smarter. Continuously adapting to new threats and staying ahead of the “bad guys” is a challenging and exciting aspect of the cutting-edge security research that he is a part of.
