Biography
Gabriela Gongora-Svartzman is an Associate Teaching Professor and the Director of Computing Programs at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, based at the Miami campus.
Before joining Northeastern University in 2025, Prof. Gongora-Svartzman was an Assistant Teaching Professor at Carnegie Mellon University, where she taught data analysis, data visualization, and machine learning. She was drawn to Northeastern for its commitment to attracting students of myriad backgrounds and perspectives, as well as its ethos of developing computing systems that improve life for all communities. In her new role, she hopes to help create meaningful impact across regions and ensure that computing education remains accessible and relevant to all.
Prof. Gongora-Svartzman is particularly eager to leverage her leadership experience in Miami, both for its rapid evolution into an exciting tech hub and as a Latina who feels deeply connected to the Miami community. She sees an opportunity to build partnerships, recruit diverse faculty and staff, and welcome new students — all to shape the campus into a thriving academic environment.
Prof. Gongora-Svartzman's research leverages data and technology to address societal challenges and improve quality of life. Recently, that has included developing ethical machine learning frameworks for decarbonization strategies to forward climate change policies. She is also deeply committed to inclusive and innovative computing pedagogy and has explored the potential of generative AI tools for creating more inclusive learning environments for students.
Prof. Gongora-Svartzman holds leadership roles at the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), where she chairs the Committee on Teaching and Learning. She was also a proud Grace Hopper Scholar and a Tapia Conference Scholar. In her free time, she is passionate about promoting women in STEM and mentoring students in data-focused competitions.
