Biography

Brianna Dym is an assistant teaching professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based at the Roux Institute in Portland, Maine.

Before joining Khoury College in 2023, Dym lectured at the University of Maine, where she strove to reimagine computing curricula and boost computing participation for students from nontraditional and underrepresented backgrounds. She feels compelled to research and remedy inequities, ensure that everyone benefits from new technologies, and foster technology-enabled community among LGBTQ+ students after finding that community online as a teenager.

Dym is continuing these efforts within Khoury College’s Align program, where she intends to empower master’s students from underrepresented communities to explore careers in human–computer interaction (HCI), data science, and computing in general. She teaches “Human–Computer Interaction” and “Programming Design Paradigms,” driven by her passion for introductory computing topics, social computing, and HCI.

In addition, Dym is interested in expanding her research to integrate her expertise in sociolinguistics and phonetics. She is also a dedicated creative writer and video game designer, which, like her computing work, stems from her drive to create and problem-solve.
