Biography
Adeel A. Bhutta is an associate teaching professor at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University.
Before joining Northeastern in 2021, Bhutta taught computer science, information technology, and electrical and computer engineering at Indiana University Bloomington, Kent State University at Stark, University of Central Florida, and Valencia College. Many of the courses he taught—plus the computer technology program at Kent State—were ones he developed from scratch. He has received numerous awards, including the James Mumford Excellence in Extraordinary Teaching Award (2021) and the Trustees Teaching Award (2019) from Indiana University, as well as SICE’s Champion of Inclusion Award in 2017.
Bhutta’s industry experience includes optimizing video compression algorithms for TriMedia processors and developing application software for Voice over IP systems. His research primarily focuses on image processing and computer vision, and he is currently working on selective subtraction and deep learning. Past projects dealt with sports video analysis for EA Sports, background subtraction, dynamic scene modeling, object detection and tracking, line tracking, dense correspondences, image restoration, view and texture synthesis, sequence alignment in bioinformatics. His most recent work is related to the impact of active learning techniques in computer science education.
Bhutta has taught a wide range of courses, including programming, software engineering, image processing and computer vision, mobile app development, and computer systems. He is a member of IEEE, ACM, and IET, and has worked as a technical reviewer for several journals and international conferences. He has served on academic, admissions, and departmental committees and councils at multiple universities.
Bhutta is an avid badminton and cricket player, and medaled several times apiece at the 2013 Sunshine State Games and the 2011 AAU Badminton National Championships. He lives with his wife Gul and daughters Afaaf, Sibaal, and Ubaab.
