Northern Virginia, sometimes called the Silicon Valley of the East, is full of opportunities and thriving tech companies. All the big players have a footprint here, from Amazon’s HQ2 to Microsoft just down the block from campus, as well as finance companies like Capital One.

With close proximity to many institutions of the US government, the Arlington campus offers opportunities to work in national security and a variety of government offices. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts 3.5 million job openings in cybersecurity by 2025, which makes it a perfect time to pursue cybersecurity programs at the Arlington campus. Student experience: A vibrant area matched by a vibrant campus

Northeastern University in Arlington provides an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment, from spaces for studying and working on projects to social activities. The Northeastern-affiliated Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security, which conducts security and defense research with the US government, is one floor down.

The Arlington campus features views of the DC skyline from its main building. Walking across the bridge to DC, students can enjoy the National Mall and its many museums, including the Smithsonian. With abundant outdoor space and a thriving culinary scene, it’s easy to have an active social life. A local Metro stop provides further accessibility and opportunity for adventure.

Featured faculty: Elizabeth Hawthorne

Elizabeth “Beth” Hawthorne is a professor and a cybersecurity graduate program director in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Arlington. She teaches graduate courses in cybersecurity and digital forensics, and is particularly passionate about the exciting, dynamic field of cybersecurity education. Hawthorne strives to broaden participation in computing and is a former chair of the ACM Education Board, which promotes computing education at all collegiate levels.
