Final Project

The purpose of this assignment is to have you synthesize the material we have discussed and that you have read and to get some experience developing a new survey that might used advanced technology.

• Revise your compare and contrast paper in response to Stephen's comments and resubmit.
• Pick a health-related behavior that you think is important to measure in the field, either to improve health research or to create more effective health interventions.This can be the same behavior you used in your compare/contrast paper or a different one. If you select a different one it is important that you do a lit search so that you can convince yourself you know the history of the development of that measure and the new technologies that might impact how we measure that concept in the future. The behavior you pick should be something that would make sense to measure repeatedly (e.g., using EMA).
• For your behavior, find all the relevant surveys used to measure it and make sure that the relevant articles that include the source questions are added to Mendeley and included in the Dropbox. That is, you should have tracked down all the major surveys used to measure that behavior.
• Review all the questions on those surveys. Consider the new methods that might use technology to measure the behavior in a new way, and the methods that might be used together with the self report.
• Develop a "paper prototype" of a new phone-based interface. You are essentially designing the "app" that people in a research study would use. The paper prototype should show exactly what the app looks like-- all parts of it. Every button clicked should have a corresponding sketched screen shot. Your goal is to define everything about how this app will work. This includes specifying what, if any, the triggering rules are for it, and if any other special technology would be used, how that would interact with it. Where the app must show data (e.g., let's say it responded to heart rate somehow and showed a summary of that), then you need to put "simulated" data on the paper. Reading the Rettig article might help with this task, although here you are producing a storyboard.
• Use the POP app on an iPhone (or come by Stephen's lab on the 4th floor of WVH to borrow an iPod Touch). This app allows you to take a picture of each screen shot and then link them together so that you end up with a "functioning" app designed on paper.
• Turn in:
  • Your revised compare/contrast paper in Word format.
  • Your POP app files.
  • An "appendix" that justifies your design for your app in the CHI format (as a Word document). This can be as long as you need it to be. Include the following info.
    • You should base this justification on your analysis of the other measures that exist today. You don't need to reproduce the app because I can see how it works through the POP app, but you need to justify the design as rigorously as you can. Why did you include what you included (be specific, for example citing the origins of the original surveys you modified where you can, because remember that researchers care about the details of the concepts they are measuring)? What did you exclude and why? How would it exploit technology and why would that make it better than current options?
    • Find at least three people who can try out your interface. The less well these people know you, the better. Spend about 30 minutes with each person. You can describe the context they are in (i.e., why are you asking them to use it and, perhaps, "imagine you are in X situation") and you can "fake" the sensor readings your app might be dependent on if it uses them, but you should not explain how to use the interface. Using the Rettig article as a guide, see what you can learn about your design by having people "try" it. Refine your interface. Describe what you learn and what you might need to improve (or just improve it!).
    • Finally, what surprised you about this exercise? What was easier/harder than you thought? What concerns do you have about the viability of your design? If Prof. Intille's research group implements your idea after the course ends, how would you recommend it be validated?

Prepare a presentation for the final class.You need to use the Petcha Kucha format, but it is up to you how to structure your presentation this time. You have 20 slides and 20 seconds each. Please use the final presentation template. The goal of the presentation will be to help you gather some additional feedback on your idea that you might be able to incorporate into your write-up.
