IS U535 Information Retrieval, 4 Credit hours
Discusses information retrieval including document models, indexing, query techniques, and results evaluation; text analysis for searching, indexing, and compression; user interfaces for text and multimedia retrieval; and digital libraries. Additional topics may include parallel and distributed architectures; support for multimedia and image retrieval; specialized query strategies; and advanced retrieval models. Course work includes using and evaluating existing IR systems as well as implementing small-scale applications that illustrate indexing and retrieval strategies.

Projects:

All students will participate in a project team with one or two other students. See the Projects page for details. Every student in the course is expected to do programming in Java and to construct web pages, though there may be exceptions.

Grading:

Credit will be distributed across quizzes, midterm, final exam, project drafts and projects. Details will appear as the course proceeds.
