Dancing with the Professors, Starring CCIS Students and Faculty
By Shandana Mufti
On April 1, the Curry Student Center Ballroom will be home to Northeastern’s inaugural Dancing with the Professors event, organized by the Ballroom Dance Club (BDC). Among the six pairs of professors and BDC dancers taking to the stage are CCIS duo Karl Lieberherr and Kathleen Newcomer.
“Karl’s been very proactive in wanting to learn the dance. He keeps asking me to send him videos so he can practice at home and various other resources so he can learn the steps,” Kathleen (BS computer science/biology ‘18) says. “Working with him has been a really great experience.”
The evening will also feature guest performances from Distilled Harmony and Revolve Dance Crew, in addition to an opening dance put on by BDC members. The six participating professors all volunteered to be part of the event. CCIS will be represented by professors Lieberherr and Nik Bear Brown, and students/BDC members Keith Claeys and Matthew Kolosick.
Kathleen and Lieberherr will be dancing a bolero, which she describes as “a very poetic dance.”
This competition is part of the BDC’s efforts to involve the Northeastern community in its activities, and one that Kathleen hopes will become an annual event. “Bringing in professors will also bring in some of their students who want to come see them dance and vote for them,” she says. “Involving these six professors is our attempt to involve the rest of the community to a greater extent.”
