First-Year Students: Getting Started at Khoury College

Welcome to the Khoury College community. From getting you situated on campus to preparing for the first steps on your academic journey, we’re here to help support the best possible start to your time at Northeastern.

Opportunities for first-year students

Undergraduate clubs

Khoury offers a variety of clubs for students to be a part of. Clubs are a great way to round out the educational experience by building a network, making friends, and gaining access to different programs.

Internships

Internships provide first year students with the opportunity to gain work experience. They are a flexible work option empowering you to learn more about different industries before starting a co-op.

Research projects

Participating in one of our many research projects will give you opportunities to gain hands-on experience as you apply your classroom knowledge. Work with leading research and make exciting discoveries that have a significant impact — both in the lab and outside it.

Living and learning at Northeastern

All students who enter as first-years (and meet housing application deadlines) are guaranteed four years of university housing. Explore Northeastern Housing and Residential Life to learn more about our computer science living learning communities.

Technology requirement

Laptops are required for all new Khoury students. You can choose either a Mac or a PC within these recommended system parameters:

  • Minimum of 16 GB of internal memory
  • As much hard disk space as you can afford (256 GB or above is recommended)
  • Display of 13” with higher resolution so it’s easier to code (14” is preferred)
  • Insurance is recommended

It’s more than adequate — and usually less expensive — to choose a processor that is one or two steps below the fastest available. Student Hub has a list of vendors that provide student discounts. If you have any questions on recommended technology, please contact us.

Account set-up and tips

As a new student at Khoury College, you’ll need to create two accounts:

Be sure to set up your Khoury account on the first day of classes. You should have set up your Northeastern account’s username and password when you first claimed your online account. If you have not yet claimed your Northeastern account, check your personal email for a message with the subject line “Claim Your Northeastern University Online Account.” Click the link in that email within 60 days of receiving it. If it has been more than 60 days, contact the IT Service Desk.
