Congratulations on your acceptance to Northeastern University — and welcome to your Khoury College PhD program. The information below will help you prepare for your academic experience, as well as life on campus and in the bustling city of Boston.
Getting oriented to life at Khoury College
PhD orientations for Khoury College happen in September and January, before the fall and spring semesters begin. As the new semester approaches, details for your program’s mandatory orientation session will be announced. The sessions provide an opportunity to meet some of the people available to you during your time at Khoury College, as well as fellow students. Academic policies, course registration, internship, and more will be outlined during the session, and you’ll have the chance to ask questions about graduate student life.
More information will be sent to incoming students before the start of the term.
International student orientation
New international students will need to complete the required check-in for the Office of Global Services (OGS). The office will send an email before the start of the semester with instructions on how to complete the orientation. They will also hold information sessions and other events during the week leading up to, and the week of, the beginning of classes. OGS is located in 405 Ell Hall. Set up your Northeastern online account
Your Northeastern account opens your way to many university resources, including Student Hub and your email account. You should have set up your username and password when you first claimed your online account.
If you have not yet claimed your account, check your personal email for a message with the subject line “Claim Your Northeastern University Online Account.” Click the link in that email within 60 days of receiving it. If it has been more than 60 days, contact the IT Service Desk.
Create your Khoury portal account
You will need to set up a Khoury Admin Portal account in addition to Northeastern account. Your Khoury Admin account gives you access to a number of processes and forms that are used by the college.
Get your Husky Card
New students taking at least one course on campus need to have a student ID, also known as a Husky Card. Once you have registered for a course, bring a photo ID to a Husky Card pick-up location.

Registering for courses
The Office of the Registrar keeps an updated and searchable course catalog. Please note at which campus each course is offered. Some courses are only available on specific campuses, and it’s important to select the appropriate campus when registering.
You can also find the open registration date and an academic calendar at the Office of the Registrar. Please pay close attention to the deadline to complete registration. Adding or dropping courses after the registration dates listed on the registrar’s website may incur fees.
How to register
You can register for courses on the Student Hub. The portal allows you to add and drop courses, confirm course registration, find room assignments, and obtain final exam schedules. The system works in real-time, so your course add/drop will be processed immediately.

- Log in with your username and password (or click “How do I get a myNortheastern username and password?” if you have never used the system before)
- Click on “Services & Links,” then “Course Registration”
- Follow the on-screen prompts
Housing and transportation
Off-campus housing
Students will need to find off-campus housing. Off-Campus Student Services can offer a lot of guidance, including information about temporary housing and community resources, plus an apartment search database of listings.

Getting to campus
Due to limited on-campus graduate housing, most students commute to campus for classes. Northeastern’s Alternative Transportation page is a good resource for the various commuting options in Boston — from driving to bicycling to taking public transportation. We recommend you review the information before arriving on campus.
Public transportation
The Boston public transportation system is called the MBTA, or “the T.” Northeastern is accessible by two different subway lines — the Orange Line and the Green “E” Line — as well as several bus routes. The MBTA provides information about routes, fares, and rider tools to help map out your trip. If you’re flying into Boston, check out the MBTA’s tips on taking the T to and from Logan Airport.
Parking
Students who commute to campus by car need to get a parking permit. Complete an application on the Student Hub, under the “Services & Links” tab. Permits can be purchased semester by semester, and fees are added to your bill on your myNortheastern account. For more information about parking regulations, costs, and permit types, please email commuting services at parking@northeastern.edu.
Please note, parking in the city can be challenging. It is very important to make note of where you can and can’t park on campus. Failure to follow regulations could result in a fine or your vehicle being towed.
Health insurance requirements
Massachusetts law requires all full-time domestic students on the Boston campus, and every international student, to be enrolled in a health insurance plan for coverage of unanticipated medical costs.
All graduate students are automatically enrolled in the Northeastern University Student Health Plan (NUSHP), an affordable option that allows graduate students without coverage to obtain care at the University Health and Counseling Center. Eligible students may waive NUSHP via the Student Hub once the charge for NUSHP (the health plan fee) appears on their bill. Print a copy of the confirmation page and deduct the health plan fee, and, if applicable, the UHCS fee from your balance due. The waiver link is located in Student Hub. Submitting the health report
All full-time or international graduate students taking courses on campus must submit a Health Report Form prior to enrolling at Northeastern University. This form needs to be returned to University Health and Counseling Services — not the graduate office. For more information, please email uhcs@northeastern.edu.
