Sandbox
Northeastern’s student-led software consultancy
Sandbox is Northeastern’s student-led software consultancy, which builds software for researchers, nonprofits, and the Northeastern community.
Sandbox’s cross-functional teams of student developers, UI/UX designers, and brand designers create impactful software projects such as the SearchNEU course finder and registration tool, the GraduateNU degree audit planner, and the NU Carpool app for students on co-op. The club also takes on projects for the Boston community; prospective clients can apply to have Sandbox build them a website or software product at no cost, like the HappyEastie tool that connects East Boston residents with local resources.
By working on a project team, Sandbox members build valuable skills such as web development, full-stack programming, cross-functional team collaboration, project management, and leadership. The group also supports a vibrant social community, hosting regular social events with other Khoury organizations and internally within the club.
Prospective clients can learn about the club’s development process and apply to work with Sandbox on the club’s website.
Sandbox has given me not just the support I need to learn new technologies and work as a team; it has given me a space where I can discover my voice and my place within the Northeastern community

Process to join
To join Sandbox, interested undergraduate students may submit an application, which opens at the end of each semester. Applicants will then complete either a technical challenge or a portfolio review depending on the position, followed by an interview with Sandbox members. Sandbox welcomes members with all ranges of experience and coursework, and tailors the recruiting process based on an applicant’s prior experience.
