Northeastern Electric Racing

Ambition drives success

Northeastern Electric Racing, or NER, is a student organization that builds all-electric formula-style race cars from scratch and competes in races.

NER’s teams cover numerous interests and specialties: the mechanical team that researches, designs, and manufactures the car; the electrical team that works with power electronics, low-voltage circuitry, and printed circuit boards; the software team that develops custom project management software and telemetry visualization tools; and the business team that runs finances, operations, and marketing. The club values inclusivity, collaboration, passion, rewarding experiences, continuous improvement, and professional development; one way they foster these values is through the software team’s weekly learning sessions, open to all Khoury students. Members can also build technical proficiency in areas like Git, Github, React, Express, and TypeScript Prisma, and can gain more general experience working on a large team of developers.

Although travel is not required, NER drives in two competitions: a Formula Hybrid + Electric race in New Hampshire in May and a Formula SAE race in Michigan in June. They have consistently scored well in the former, including a win in the electric vehicle category in 2021. The team also received the 2023 IEEE Excellence in Project Management Award for their in-house product management software, Finishline.

We aim to give students experience working on a larger team of developers, and give them the tools to make their own projects
