Alumnus Adam Markon on Life After Scout

Across the Charles River from Northeastern, Adam Markon (BSCS ’18) works at Hubspot as a software engineer. He attributes much of his growth at Northeastern to his work with Northeastern student design organization, Scout, which fuses design, coding, and entrepreneurship to develop design solutions for clients. When he was its technology director, one of his missions was to make coding less intimidating for the business and design students. He also served as an engineering manager, overseeing Scout’s student members and checking every line of code for the (then) 11 developers.

Markon credits Scout with allowing him to work directly with a diverse set of clients. He was able to work through the entire process of translating requirements from customers and helping design and implement products. At Scout, he reports that he gained “the independence, confidence, and freedom to grow as an individual.”

Reflecting on his experiences in the classroom, Markon expresses gratitude for his Khoury College professors, specifically noting David Choffnes, who would recount anecdotes from speaking, such as to the Boston Globe on net neutrality violations, or to colleagues at the Internet Measurement Conference. Markon says, “These were cool, motivating stories for us to hear how the things that we were learning in class from these professors are things that have made them an expert in their individual field.”

During his undergraduate studies, Markon completed his first co-op at Infinio, and his subsequent co-ops at HubSpot. Markon attributes his professional success to the co-op managers who entrusted him with the responsibility of an independent engineer. After graduation, he accepted a full-time position at Hubspot, which offers a suite of software for marketing, sales, and customer service.

As a Hubspot software engineer, Markon dedicates his time to the front-end performance of the HubSpot CRM (Customer Relationship Manager), ensuring that users can always load HubSpot accessibly. “I’m surrounded by people who challenge me, want me to be more successful, and push me to want to be more successful,” says Markon – which fulfills a Khoury College aspiration for all of its students, past, present, and future.
