Alan Mislove appointed as interim dean of Khoury College
Date: 06.24.21
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Alan Mislove, professor of computer science, has been appointed as interim dean of the Khoury College of Computer Sciences effective July 1, 2021.
Within Khoury College, Mislove has served as senior associate dean for academic affairs since January 2021, as associate dean for faculty affairs since July 2020, and as associate dean for undergraduate programs from August 2016 through June 2020. He will serve as interim dean until a permanent dean is appointed following Northeastern University’s international search.
“I’m extraordinarily excited to lead Khoury at this moment,” said Mislove. “Dean Brodley has done a tremendous job of scaling Khoury during her leadership—in terms of the programs we offer, the students we teach, and the faculty and staff who call Khoury home—and at the same time, she has positioned us as leaders in multiple areas of computing.” Mislove plans to continue in this trajectory by providing a world-class education to Khoury students that spans both traditional and interdisciplinary computing topics. In addition, Mislove will oversee the growth of Khoury College’s research portfolio and collaborations with industry partners. He also plans to advance Khoury College’s leadership in addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging (DEIAB) issues in computing.
Since joining Northeastern in 2009, Mislove has focused his research pursuits on developing and deploying measurement methodologies to identify security, privacy, and discrimination issues in large-scale, real-world computer systems. He is a member of the Algorithm Auditing Research Group, which works to understand how sophisticated algorithms are being implemented, the data they are using, and their effects on individuals. As a core faculty member of the Cybersecurity and Privacy Institute, Mislove contributes to cutting-edge research on the safeguarding of critical technology, from cryptography and cloud security to malware analysis and detection. Finally, Mislove is an affiliated faculty member at the Global Resilience Institute, an interdisciplinary institute committed to developing and deploying practical and innovative tools and applications that strengthen the resilience of individuals, communities, systems, networks, and societies.
His work comprises over 90 conference and journal articles, is the recipient of numerous awards (including the ACM SIGCOMM Test of Time Award), has been funded by over $7 million in external funding (including an NSF CAREER award), and has been widely covered in the press. He is also involved in shaping public policy around algorithms and privacy, having worked with multiple regulatory agencies and having been a plaintiff in the recent, successful Sandvig v. Barr CFAA lawsuit that provided stronger legal grounding for algorithmic auditing.
We hope the community will join us in thanking our colleague, Alan, for his enthusiasm to serve as interim dean. He is looking forward to leveraging the strengths of the College to move us in new, exciting directions during this time of transition.
“Khoury College is extraordinarily well-positioned for its next chapter,” explained Mislove. “Most of all, I’m proud to be able to represent Khoury to the University and beyond — I truly could not imagine a better set of colleagues with whom I get to work every day,” he concluded.
