Community Partnerships
Global network, local connections
Using computer science skills to change lives
Khoury College’s commitment to leveraging computing for equitable societal gain goes beyond our mission of Computer Science for Everyone and our overarching ethical instruction in the classroom. It permeates the relationships the college forges with local community partners throughout our global network and the work made possible by these partnerships.
By helping build tailored, user-friendly software tools and infrastructure, Khoury students enable community groups to operate more efficiently, achieve more effectively, and expand their reach to new populations and projects. The students benefit too, building their coding and collaboration skills through hands-on experience and deepening their connection to the communities in which they study.
Here’s a look at some of Khoury College’s community partnerships, and the ways those initiatives are making communities a better and more equitable place.
Community initiatives
Speak for the Trees Boston
Speak for the Trees Boston aims to expand and strengthen Greater Boston’s urban forest, especially in under-canopied neighborhoods. Khoury students built a tree stewardship app that allows users to aid the conservation effort, and are now building an interactive tree map to support similar efforts in Cambridge.
Massachusetts Medical Society
The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is a statewide association of 25,000 physicians and medical students that advocates for physicians and patients, supports public health, and influences health-related legislation. Thanks to an established hiring pathway, students from Khoury College’s Align program work to support MMS’s technology platform.
AI in rural communities
Students from remote areas are often forced to leave if they want to study AI. By partnering with these learners and their communities, Khoury researchers Saiph Savage and Yvonne Coady are tailoring AI education to meet their needs.
Breaktime
Breaktime strives to break the cycle of homelessness by equipping young adults with job and financial security. Khoury students are designing software to support Breaktime’s mission.
Rewriting the Code
Rewriting the Code is a peer network that provides education, support, and mentorship to women pursuing tech careers. With Khoury College as the organization’s first collegiate partner, students gain a sense of belonging and community from those who precede them, and pass those benefits along to those who come after.
Lucy’s Love Bus
Lucy’s Love Bus provides integrative therapies to children with life-threatening illnesses, easing their pain and anxiety during and after traditional medical treatments. Khoury students are building an open search directory to allow families across New England to find local integrative therapists.
Rewriting the Code
Rewriting the Code (RTC) is a peer network that provides education, support, and mentorship to women pursuing tech careers. RTC founder and CEO Sue Harnett discusses what inspired her to create the group, and how it helps women in tech “become the leaders of the future that we really need in the technology industry.”
