Katherine Socha is an associate teaching professor in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, based in Arlington, Virginia.

Socha teaches algorithms, machine learning, and data science courses in the Align bridge and MSCS programs. She is passionate about fostering students’ abilities to use mathematical and computational reasoning to solve problems in any field of interest.

Prior to joining Khoury College in 2023, Socha taught at many levels, including a tenured appointment in mathematics and computer science at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the state honors college. She is a past winner of two national awards from the MAA: the Alder Award for distinguished teaching and the Ford Award recognizing expository excellence for her article “Creating a Mathematical Model of Surface Water Waves.”

She also studies and plays the hammered dulcimer, a cross-cultural instrument whose strings are stretched over a trapezoidal sound board and struck with small mallets.
