Today, every company is driven by data. The demand for expertise in data science has never been higher. The Align Master’s in Data Science will teach you the skills to harness the power of data, even without a tech background.
The first two semesters of the program provide students with the foundational knowledge needed to successfully study alongside direct entry graduate students. In just two and a half years, you’ll learn to collect, analyze and comprehend data, and how to use it to solve some of the world’s most complex organizational problems. Industry-facing co-ops and internships are an essential element of our curriculum – allowing you to bring the knowledge you gain in the classroom into the real world, and your real world experience back to class.
Interdisciplinary study is at the heart of our Data Science program. This shared curriculum between the Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the College of Engineering will provide you the comprehensive expertise in mathematics, computer science and data engineering necessary to thrive.
Offered in our Boston, Silicon Valley and Portland, ME campuses, our program will help you emerge from your studies prepared for wherever data leads you. (Please note that applications are not being accepted for the Spring 2024 semester in Portland or Silicon Valley for the Align MS in Data Science.)

At Khoury, we know you don’t need a background in tech to have a future in it. Technology thrives on new, diverse, and unexpected ideas–it needs new perspectives. So in 2013, we launched the Align Program–a Master’s degree in computer science for people with a Bachelor’s in a non-technical field. Following that success, we’re now launching an Align Program for a Master’s degree in data science. In the Align Program, you’ll learn to blend your new skills with the knowledge you’ve already gained in other disciplines. Your experience brought you this far. In Align, it’ll take you even further with the power of data.

An MSDS degree enables you to:
An MSDS degree enables you to collect data from numerous sources (databases, files, images) and integrate them into a form in which the data is fit for analysis. Students develop strong programming and analysis skills to explore data, produce summary statistics, perform statistical analyses; using standard data mining and machine-learning models for effective analysis. Students learn to work with both structure and unstructured data. The program provides you with the knowledge to manage, process, analyze, and visualize data at scale. You will learn about the limitations of machine learning and data mining methods as applied to real-world problems and communicate the advantages/disadvantages of the methods to non-data experts. Students will carry out the full data analysis workflow, including unsupervised class discovery, supervised class comparison, and supervised class prediction. They will learn how to properly summarize, interpret, and communicate the analysis of results. In this program you will develop methods for modeling, analyzing, and reasoning about data arising in one or more application domains such as social science, health informatics, web and social media, climate informatics, urban informatics, geographical information systems, business analytics, bioinformatics, complex networks, public health, and game design.
In the digital age, every industry runs on and relies on data to stay competitive. Companies of all sizes, across a wide range of professions, are actively looking to fill thousands of data driven roles across the country. Our MSDS graduates find success in a variety of these positions, including:
