Casper Harteveld is a professor of game design in the Department of Arts and Design in the College of Arts, Media, and Design at Northeastern University. He holds a courtesy appointment in the Khoury College of Computer Sciences, and the Northeastern University School of Law. He also has affiliated appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering in the College of Engineering. Aside from his appointments, Harteveld works closely with faculty in the marine science and public policy departments.
He uses games in his research to study and improve decision-making, with hopes to advance and engage global citizenship. He collects expansive behavioral data in a controlled setting while applying game analytics to areas that are difficult to comprehend. As a strong proponent of integrating research and education Harteveld devotes a significant portion of his work to translating research outcomes in the classroom or informal settings, to ensure that the next generation is prepared to tackle society’s upcoming challenges. Working across disciplines, Harteveld has designed games that shed light on sustainability issues, help pro se litigants navigate the court, and teach computer science concepts through procedurally generated puzzles.
Harteveld’s awards include; the Young Talent Prize of Information Systems, Best Dissertation Award on Simulation & Gaming, five NSF awards, and DARPA’s Young Faculty Award. In 2014 he became a fellow for the National Science Foundation of the Next Generation of Hazards & Disasters Researchers Fellowship.
