Biography
Alejandro Mera is a PhD student in the Cybersecurity program at Northeastern University, advised by Professor Engin Kirda. Mera’s research is focused on the security issues of Internet of things devices. Prior to joining Khoury, Mera studied technical and management strategies to define Information Security models during his master’s program in Management and Telecommunications Networks at the University of the Armed Forces in Sangolquí, Ecuador. Mera earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Army Polytechnic School.
What are the specifics of your graduate education (thus far)?
I have studied supply chain risks and malicious modifications of commercial off-the-shelf devices (COTS). Specially, I have studied open-source hardware/software related to single-board computers and microcontrollers.
What are your research interests?
I am mostly interested in security issues of embedded and IoT devices.
What’s one problem you’d like to solve with your research/work?
I would like to solve problems related to secure deployment of IoT devices.
What aspect of what you do is most interesting?
Embedded devices are ubiquitous, they are between us collecting data and sharing information, it would be great to take advantage of these new technologies maintaining privacy and security in a connected environment.
What are your research or career goals, going forward?
I would like to teach and lead a research team.
Where did you grow up or spend your most defining years?
I was born in Quito, Ecuador.
Where did you study for your undergraduate degree?
I studied at the Army Politechnic School in Ecuador. I have been playing/working with embedded devices and microcontrollers for more than 10 years, and I have found the opportunity to provide novelty security solutions for the industry.
