Biography

Joseph J. Rushanan is a part-time lecturer at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University. He earned his bachelor's and master's in mathematics from the Ohio State University, and his PhD in mathematics from the California Institute of Technology. His research and teaching areas include security, cryptography, and mathematics. Rushanan also works as a principal mathematician at the MITRE Corporation, where his current focus is on GPS and other positioning, navigation, and timing research. He has worked at MITRE for over 35 years.

Rushanan received the Institute of Navigation’s 2019 Captain P.V.H. Weems Award for sustained contributions to the design of GPS, including M-Code, the L1C signal, and the promotion of assurance concepts for all GPS users.
